Main duties and responsibilities

The Environmental Technician works closely with Environmental, Plant and HR management to coordinate all environmental activities for the assigned site and to ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The position is responsible for assisting in developing, communicating, and maintaining simple but effective environmental programs that meet regulatory standards. The position performs routine checks, equipment calibration, and analysis of environmental data and assists in reporting to local, state, and federal authorities. Some, but not all, of the daily duties of the position include:

• Assist in the development of environmental policies, programs and procedures to eliminate the occurrence of environmental incidents.
• Serve as a technical resource to the company in complex areas of environmental compliance, risk management, and hazardous materials/waste management.
• Attend necessary seminars and training to maintain and update skills in federal and state environmental laws and regulations.
• Develop and deliver training and coaching for team members, contractors, and others on environmental issues to ensure skills competence, understanding of policies and procedures, and to maintain compliance with corporate, federal, state, and local regulations, directives, standards, policies, and procedures.
• Maintain all compulsory record keeping and reporting per regulatory guidelines
• Monitor performance measurements relating to environmental equipment and report problems along with solutions.
• Ensure compliance with air, water, and land permits and other environmental requirements.
• Collect water samples from raw, semi-processed, or processed water, industrial wastewater, or water from other sources to assess water quality.
• Install and maintain data collection instrumentation.
• Conduct bacteriological or other tests related to research in environmental or pollution control activity.
• Operate light and heavy equipment including, but not limited to, pumps, vacuums, and mobile equipment.
• Perform basic calculations and computer data entry.
• Prepare and maintain necessary reports and records as required.
• Set up equipment or stations to monitor and collect pollutants from sites, such as pollution abatement equipment; assist in organizing compliance testing.
• Assist management in appropriate loss control and incident prevention measures.

Requirements

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED:

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work with little or no direct supervision
• Knowledge of environmental law
• Excellent diplomatic skills and the ability to use them with all levels
• Ability to exercise good judgment in setting priorities and follow-through in a fast-
paced results –oriented environment
• Strong desire to learn manufacturing processes, develop leadership capabilities and
possess desire to progress in organization
• Excellent verbal/written communication and presentation skills.
• Strong interpersonal and problem solving skills.
• Capability to prioritize work activities, assignments, demands and flexibility to adapt to
changes.
• Strong analytical skills.
• Excellent work ethic, strong time management and organizational skills.
• Must be able to work flexible hours and be available upon the needs of the business.
This may include rotating shifts, nights, and/or weekends.

WHAT WILL PUT YOU AHEAD

• Bachelor's degree in environmental, chemistry, or engineering course of studies
• 3+ years in a fast paced manufacturing setting
